Local Licensing Server System Requirements

What a machine needs to run the Local Licensing Server, and what the network around it has to allow. Once these are in place, continue with Installation.

This page describes Local Licensing Server 5.1. For version 4.2 and earlier the details may differ — see the delivery instruction for version 4.2 (PDF).

Hardware

The server can run directly on a physical machine or on a virtual machine. The minimum is 2 GB of disk space, 1 GB of RAM and a 64-bit CPU with 2 cores at 2 GHz. While it runs, the application does not accumulate any significant permanent data, so the disk does not fill up over time.

If the SMath Studio Cloud service is part of your server delivery, the requirements grow with the number of simultaneous users and the complexity of their work. For every 2–5 concurrent Cloud users, add 1 CPU core, 0.5 GB of RAM and 0.5 GB of disk space. Disk usage also grows with the volume of worksheets processed, so the administrator should increase the available space over time to match the load.

Software updates delivered as part of technical or warranty support may need more RAM and CPU.

Software

The server is delivered for the Docker platform, so it can run on almost any modern server, Linux or Windows. Docker and Docker Compose must be installed on the machine that will host the server.

  • If you already have a Docker host in your network, installation takes a few minutes: you receive a self-sufficient Docker Compose configuration. You may only need to change the external ports if the standard ports 80 and 443 are already taken.
  • If you do not have a Docker host yet, install Linux on any available hypervisor or a dedicated physical machine — Ubuntu is recommended, but any distribution you prefer will do — and install Docker there.

Tested configurations

The images have been tested on Windows and on Linux (Fedora, Ubuntu and Debian among others). The following combinations have been verified:

  • Astra Linux SE 1.7.5 — Docker 24.0.2, Docker Compose 1.29.2
  • RED OS 8 — Docker 27.4.1, Docker Compose 2.32.1
  • Ubuntu Server 22.04 — Docker 26.1.4, Docker Compose 2.27.1
  • Ubuntu Desktop 24.04 LTS — Docker 24.0.6, Docker Compose 2.21.0
  • Fedora Workstation 40 — Docker 26.1.1, Docker Compose 2.27.0
  • Microsoft Windows 11 — Docker 20.10.17, Docker Compose 2.6.1. In this environment Docker Desktop starts the platform after a reboot only while a user is logged in.

The server has also been installed successfully inside an LXC container (based on Ubuntu Desktop 24.04) under Proxmox.

Network

If the network filters traffic, allow the following:

Give the Docker host a static IPv4 address in your network and keep it for the whole life of the server: SMath Studio Enterprise obtains licenses through exactly this address. You may also register a readable DNS name for the server and use it both for the web management console and when connecting SMath Studio. Even then, client machines must be able to reach the server by its IP address.

A web proxy in front of the server is acceptable if:

  • the server is always available at the root of its URL (https://example.local/, not https://example.local/some/path);
  • all pages of the server's website are available on the same IP address and port as its main page;
  • the server is reachable from client machines by IP address — SNI (Server Name Indication) is not supported;
  • with a DNS zone, only the first IP address of all A records of the name is used by clients.

Redirection from HTTP to HTTPS is supported if the server listens on HTTPS. Clients can obtain licenses over either scheme, on the same port. A valid SSL certificate is not required, because the license packages are signed themselves. SMath does not collect your local network configuration, IP address or port included — only a SHA256 hash of it.

System time

The server machine must have the correct date and time.

  • Set up automatic synchronization with a time source (NTP).
  • With a significant time deviation, the server can neither load licenses nor distribute them to SMath Studio. The client machines need the correct time too — see License Obtaining Challenges.
