Free Version of SMath Studio

The free version of SMath Studio runs on the Personal license, which is issued to your account automatically when you register on smath.com. It gives you the same mathematical engine and the same "paper"-like interface as the paid Advanced and Unlimited plans, on Windows, Linux and in the Cloud. What it restricts is storage, commercial use and a set of advanced features — all listed on this page.

Our commitment to the free version

SMath started in 2006 as a free program, and it is the people who used it for free — university professors, teachers, students, engineers and math enthusiasts around the world — who helped turn it into the product it is today (About). We remember where we started from.

That is why we are not giving up on the free version. On the contrary, we work to keep it an interesting and modern offer in its own right, not a stripped-down demo:

  • It is not a separate, older build. The free version runs the same code base as the paid plans, so every improvement to the computational core — new functions, better units handling, faster and more accurate algorithms — reaches free users at the same time as everyone else.
  • It stays current. New releases are available to free users on the download page, just as they are to paying customers.
  • It is open to the community. Free extensions from the Online gallery can be installed through the Extensions Manager, and anyone can create and share extensions of their own.

The limits described below exist to cover the cost of developing SMath and to protect shared services such as the Cloud from abuse — not to hold back the mathematics.

What the free version includes

Limitations

Software and features

  • Watermarked printing. Every document printed from the free version carries a watermark saying it was made with free software. Paid plans remove it — if the watermark is still there after purchase, see the FAQ.
  • No paid extensions. Premium add-ons are available only in the Advanced and Unlimited plans.
  • Basic SMath Viewer only. The free plan activates the Basic version of SMath Viewer, which creates executable files from worksheets. The full-featured version is reserved for paid plans.

SMath Studio Cloud

The free plan in SMath Studio Cloud is limited more strictly, because it runs on shared servers:

Free plan Paid plans
Worksheets stored per account 3 Unlimited
Total size of all worksheet files 512 KiB 256 MiB or 1 GiB
CPU time for calculations, per worksheet 1 second Up to 3 seconds
Restoring a worksheet from earlier revisions Not available Available

Note: If you use the Cloud without registering, your worksheets are public: there is no access control on them.

Commercial and organizational use

  • Personal use only. The free version may not be used for commercial purposes.
  • Not for organizations. Neither the Personal nor the Advanced plan is approved for use in organizations or businesses. Legal use in a company requires the Unlimited plan.
  • No integration or automation. Advanced integration methods, such as full-featured command-line control, are not available — they are provided by SMath Studio Enterprise under a suitable license.

Licensing and devices

  • An account is required. Without a registered SMath account the program runs in Trial mode and shows reminders suggesting an upgrade.
  • Up to 5 devices. One account can activate the free version on up to five devices. The Advanced plan removes this limit.
  • A connection to the licensing server. Even the free license is issued by the Root Licensing Server, so the program needs to reach it — or you can use Offline Mode.
  • No organizational licensing. A Local Licensing Server on your network, floating licenses and custom software branding are available only in the Unlimited plan.

When to upgrade

If you need to use SMath at work, print documents without a watermark, keep more worksheets in the Cloud or automate calculations, one of the paid plans is the right choice. Licensing Types explains how licenses work, and the current plans and prices are on the Pricing page. The terms of use for every plan, free included, are set out in the EULA.
